The holiday season brings excitement—decorations, gift guides, familiar recipes, and time for loved ones. Yet, it's also a time when many of us struggle with overcommitment, finding it difficult to say no. No to plans, no to overspending, and no to time-consuming traditions. For me, the challenge is not wanting to disappoint anyone or miss out. I want to be present and connected, but my energy has limits. Ignoring that leaves me feeling overwhelmed rather than fulfilled.
Many meaningful things are happening during the holidays: family traditions, religious and cultural celebrations, gatherings with friends, seasonal outings, and more. While these moments matter and can be a lot of fun, choosing to participate only in what aligns with your values and energy will help the season feel purposeful rather than exhausting. Simply put, you don’t have to attend everything to experience the beauty of the holidays. Sometimes the magic comes from slowing down.
Remember: You can choose what you join. You do not need to earn your rest or explain your boundaries. The holidays do not require self-sacrifice to be meaningful.
This year, I’m focusing on protecting my energy so I can fully experience the moments that matter most. I'm going to practice being intentional and continue to remind myself that saying no can be just as important as saying yes. This can help us embrace the holidays in a way that feels fulfilling.
As the season starts, consider what brings you joy, connection, and peace, and allow yourself to let go of the rest. Your time and presence are valuable. Spend them in ways that feel good and genuine to you. One simple way is to reflect and jot down three things that frequently bring you joy or peace, which can help clarify what matters to you and guide your choices this season.
More reflections and holiday posts to come.
Xoxo, Lynsey
