The Most Important Thing My Mom Ever Taught Me

This morning I woke up with this deep sense of gratitude—not just for the things in my life, but for the people who fill it: my family, my friends, my circle of support. I kept thinking about my mom, and how much of who I am comes from the lessons she has quietly and consistently taught me: love, patience, and growth.
The one that really stuck with me, though? Love.
I was learning about Bhakti Yoga the other day, and something they believe really hit home: that all of us—every single one—want love, and want to give love. And honestly? I couldn’t agree more.
Here’s the thing: we could have everything. All the money, all the time, all the comfort, all the peace. And yet, we’d still crave love. Not just the romantic kind (though that can be beautiful), but the love that runs through so many other parts of life.
There’s the love that runs through family, the kind that can feel like home. The love between best friends who choose each other over and over again. Even the love we have for our pets that turns us into complete mush (Yes, let’s not pretend we don’t have full conversations with our pets).
But seriously, I think real love—the kind that makes life full—is ceaseless, unmotivated, and selfless. Personally, and I think others would agree, it’s not something I consciously decide on. It just… happens. It grows slowly and quietly, and one day I realize, oh wow, I really love this person, this thing, this life. It almost feels like love chooses me instead of the other way around.
And maybe that’s the whole point. Love, in its purest form, has no ego. It asks for nothing, owes nothing, and doesn’t keep score. It’s just this flicker of feeling that’s free and open.
So, with that in mind, I’m going to make a little list of all the love in my life. The people I love. The people who love me. Even the little things—like movie nights with my roommates, my sister sending me a random TikTok that makes me laugh, even the little things I love about myself. Because why not? I think it is a sweet reminder of just how much love already surrounds us. If you need a little boost today or feel inspired, maybe make your own list too!
Don't worry, this blog will be making it on the list.
xo,
Lynsey
